Owner of Heart and Soul Apparel

Q:   What Oklahoma connections do you have?

A:    I was born and raised in Moore, OK and went to college at Oklahoma Christian University.  I was actually a cheerleader when Sherrie Coale played on the basketball team there.

Q:   What is your favorite OU women’s basketball memory?

A:   Every time I watch the OU women play, it’s my favorite memory because they play like Sherri did in college: full of passion and energy!

Q:   What was the catalyst for starting Heart and Soul Apparel?

A:   Ever since my kids were little, I have been making shirts and sweats that say “pom mom” or “rugby mom.”  Also, I have always made OU shirts for my sister and me to wear to OU football and basketball games.  One day when we were heading to an OU vs. Texas football game, my sister said, “You need to make this stuff for other people to wear!”

Q:   What is the process for designing your unique Sooner apparel?

A:   First I conceptualize and draw the design. Then, I figure out how to put it on a shirt, sweats, hat, onesies, blanket, etc. None of my designs are screen-printed.  Instead, every item I design is hand made and can be customized according to the customer’s preferences.

Q:   Do you design apparel for any other college sports programs?

A:   My passion is to design items for the University of Oklahoma sports teams, especially women’s basketball.  It is almost impossible for me to create designs for other universities, because I am not a fan of any school except the University of Oklahoma. I have created designs for OSU, but only because my daughter was on the OSU pom squad.

Q:   How can people reach you to place an order from Heart and Soul Apparel?

A:    The best way to reach me is via email at soonrfan@yahoo.com.

Sooner Stilettos Support all Female Student-Athletes at 2011 Sports and Cohorts Event

25 Apr

In 2003, Coale had the idea to create a group whose members not only would support the athletic efforts of the team, but also whose makeup would reflect the strong, confident professionals that Coach Coale was grooming her players to become.  Thus was born the Sooner Stilettos.

Now in its eighth year, the Sooner Stilettos serve the women’s basketball program in numerous ways: they host watch parties and attend games, lead mentoring sessions and, through their membership dues, help fund the Marita Hynes Scholarship Endowment, one of the 15 fully endowed scholarships created by private donors for the women’s basketball team.  Through their interactions with players, Stiletto members help shape the development of OU’s female student-athletes and guide their journey in becoming the next generation of business, community and philanthropic leaders.

Earlier this month, the Stiletto’s expanded their impact beyond women’s basketball to all of the University of Oklahoma women’s sports by hosting an event titled “Sports and Cohorts: Women Entrepreneurs.”  The April 20th event was held from 7:00p.m. – 9:00p.m. at the women’s practice court in Lloyd Noble Arena and was wildly successful, as approximately 100 female student-were in attendance, along with 30 to 50 Sooner Stiletto members.

The event kicked off with a panel discussion led by Lou Kerr, President and CEO of The Kerr Foundation. The panel consisted of women featured in Lou Kerr and Jarretta Nord’s book, “A Cup of Cappuccino for the Entrepreneur’s Spirit.” After the panel shared the lessons they have learned through business and life, the student-athletes were able to rotate through tables where panel members were stationed for mentoring opportunities as they asked questions and received feedback from the selected entrepreneurs.

Having female role models from the business world interact with the OU student-athletes will help them see many unique possibilities in business and entrepreneurship. This one-of-a-kind mentoring opportunity also will provide tangible examples of how the young women can transfer their special attributes as athletes into their future roles in business and other areas of leadership in our society.

“The Stilettos have proven to be a source of encouragement, strength, and inspiration for our young women,” Coach Coale said.  “As our program continues to evolve and excel, so must our support systems.  Thus, the Sooner Stilettos are poised for record numbers of involvement and a depth of impact unparalleled.” Undoubtedly, the 2011 Sports and Cohorts event on April 20 will increase the impact that the Sooner Stilettos are having on the University of Oklahoma and its female student-athletes.

Sooner Stilettos Alumni Brunch

16 Feb

Recently the Sooner Stilettos hosted an Alumni Brunch at Embassy Suites here in Norman, Oklahoma.

Sooner Stilettos enjoyed visiting with many former student athletes, despite the snow covered roads we faced outside.

We feasted on an array of fabulous food and wished two current board members a very Stiletto birthday!

Before heading over to watch our beloved Sooners beat Iowa State.

Much thanks to Stiletto members, Lyn Andarakes and Susan Rutter, for dedicating their time to create such a great even for us to attend.
